... What is hypnosis, how do we enter a state of hypnosis and what are its stages? and what is its relationship to hypnotherapy?

Happy brain

Hypnosis is a normal state of mind that all people enter daily, it is a state of rest for our minds. In a state of hypnosis, the conscious mind is in a state of inactivity while the subconscious mind is open, being immediately fully functional in the activities we perform. Most of the time, as we will see below, we enter a state of hypnosis involuntarily or voluntarily if we are trained to "induce" ourselves to enter this state, through hypnosis techniques .

A typical example is operating in a state of hypnosis in

our everyday life, is when we drive on the road and don't understand how we have gone from one point to another, lost in our thoughts and yet functioning perfectly , overtaking or stopping at traffic lights.

Another example is, when we are so absorbed in front of the television, watching the show that interests us with concentration and we are cut off from consciously monitoring our environment, then we are again at the same level of mind as the one we enter during hypnotherapy.

The state of hypnosis is defined as the selective focus of attention . So we understand that we can be in a state of hypnosis even with our eyes open and it has to do with the level of mind we are operating at that moment and not with whether our eyes are open or not.

How the name Hypnosis came about

As we understand, the state of hypnosis has nothing to do with sleep. This is a misinterpretation when the English doctor James Braid, observing his patients entering a state of hypnosis, wanted to give a

name and inspired by it which reminded them of sleep and called it Hypnosis, from the Greek word ύνπος.

Hypnosis and Brain Waves

In a state of hypnosis our brain waves are between Alpha and Theta , which are 8-12Hz and 4-8Hz respectively and which are measured using electroencephalography. In a state of hypnosis with Alpha brain waves is when we are driving on the road where we are completely focused and aware of our environment , while in Theta brain waves, we enter when we are at the beginning of sleep , where we are very relaxed and are in the transitional stage of contact with the environment. In both cases we have perception of the environment, we listen and react normally.

The Hypnosis State and Hypnotherapy

Now in a hypnotherapy session, we create the framework so that the client, in a state of hypnosis, that is, selective focus of attention and in a state of deep relaxation , where our physiology and neuroplasticity function at their maximum and in this state where our subconscious is most open and receptive, we introduce learning .

Learning is in the form of an invitation to change , learning new, more functional ways of thinking and by extension feeling and acting. Now, being in a state of deep hypnosis, we have access to the deep subconscious, where all the deep emotions that were encoded at some point in our lives and which remain deeply rooted and which They influence the way we think and react , influencing us on an unconscious level.

The state of hypnosis during hypnotherapy can be achieved in many ways and techniques. In Clinical Therapeutic Hypnotherapy, the method of choice concerns only calm approaches to inducing a state of hypnosis in the patient. We promote the activation of our parasympathetic nervous system through therapeutic hypnotic speech, neuromuscular relaxation and breathing while creating a sense of security and confidence in our patient, maximizing the effectiveness of the hypnotherapy method.
