The lighthouse and the limits

I imagine a man inside a lighthouse.
A vast, calm sea stretches out before him. There are no ships. There is nothing on the horizon approaching or receding. No storm, no danger, no one waiting for his light.
Man is free and Nothing limits him.
And yet, this absence of boundaries doesn't feel like freedom. It feels like emptiness.
The sea is so vast, it almost ceases to be a sea. It stands before him motionless, like a painted backdrop. It does not change. It does not respond. It does not reflect his light.
And he continues to shine brighter and brighter...
But for whom?
A lighthouse exists in relation to something else. Its light takes on meaning when there is a ship somewhere that can see it, orient itself, change course. But here there is nothing to correspond.
There is no "I see you."
There is no "I need you".
There isn't even a "your light has reached this far."
And when nothing returns the light, at some point perhaps the person himself has difficulty seeing himself.
The windows of the lighthouse have no glass. There is almost nothing between the inside and the outside. He can see everywhere, but nothing protects him from the vastness.
And then I think that maybe boundaries don't exist just to limit us.
They also exist to give us shape.
The coast limits the sea, but at the same time shows us where it begins and where it ends.
The frame limits a painting, but through it the painting becomes visible.
The skin is a boundary, but thanks to it my body exists and the world outside me exists.
And in relationships, the boundary is what allows for there to be an "I" and a "you."
Without it, perhaps there is no real encounter. There is only a vast field where anything can happen — and ultimately nothing happens.
So perhaps the absolute absence of limits is not absolute freedom.
Maybe it's the absence of resistance, response, anticipation, relationship.
The man in the lighthouse is not imprisoned by limits.
He is imprisoned by their absence.
And perhaps this is ultimately the paradox:
The limit is not only where freedom stops... It is also where the self becomes visible.
